EyeCandy? i-can-d? What is Eye Candy?

EyeCandy : i-can-d : Eye Candy is defined (for the purposes of this blog) as synchronous digital video, often deliverable via projection screens, designed to enhance, support, or reinforce the lyrical, thematic, or rhetorical elements of specific songs within the context of conventional live Rock music performances (i.e., a bar band).
Sidebar - Regarding "Conventions": While EyeCandy : i-can-d : Eye Candy practitioners, both Blue Marble Beat and the-nerve, are far from "a conventional Rock band". But the definition still works well, because of the availability of performance venues (or the lack thereof) for "unconventional" performers. Fortunately, because it's a blog, we can tweak the definition as necessary, on-the-fly.

AN EXAMPLE... MORE OR LESS:

The above example is a pretty ballad (after the raucous :50 second intro), which the-nerve performed live. "Just A Day/Time With You" is probably the most well-received song I've penned. I must to give props to my dear friend, DJ Krazerock, who is a genius, for giving me the beat.

WHADDYA MEAN BY "MORE OR LESS"?

More:
The examples are close to bona fide Eye Candy : i-can-d : EyeCandy (within the context this blog's stated purpose) because they are indeed digital video, mostly found on the web. For truly boundless sources of material, see the earlier blog post, titled "Let the Knowledge Sharing Begin".

I prefer the "low tech", DIY, graffiti-esque feel of these presentations, opposed to just ripping scenes from my favorite DVD movies and regurgitating them back onto another screen. [To Be Continued]

Less:
While they are quite serviceable as a gimmick/web promotional device, they just *don't* work as Eye Candy : i-can-d : EyeCandy (in the context of what the-nerve started to do, and what BMB may one day perfect). Why? Because they're very scripted... story-boarded... "hard-coded", as it were. I learned that enslaving a live band to such a strict, pre-determined, immutable, structure (as these examples require) is anathematic to live performance (or, at the very least, the enjoyment thereof). And for us, that live thang we do is the Hokey-Pokey... "That's what it's all about". Unless we're on the Dick Clark tip, these examples have proven to be not a viable solution. Our solution needs to be more fluid, more flexible. The band must drive the Eye Candy : i-can-d : EyeCandy; not vice versa.

So, while idea of a live VJ as a full-fledged bandmate is the first, best and most obvious solution to this conundrum, we've yet to discover anything close to that kind of wet-ware interface for this system. Consider this your invite, if you think you got the goods.

That reality limits our options to finding or building some hybrid solution whereas [to be continued]

Addendum: Below is another example, some skrate-em-up Funk (or, as we say, "fOnk") called "Can You Feel Me", which the-nerve also performed live. Initial Creative Conspirators: Kraze (again) and my songwriting sensi, Neil, from whom I haven't heard in far too long.

Due to such a warm response, I've trying to get around to look to posting some *Live* performances from the-nerve for a while. My brilliant, dear and stalwart friend Mark Duncan (who knows me better than most, as a decade of collaboration with the-nerve, among others, grows nearer) recently blessed me with his edited video archives of our nerve-us follies.

Here's one: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3468502686170873589

I myself, can still hardly believe those Funky Fonky FOnky-Ast Hammerheads. I'll post some more when I can, but if you can't wait until then, go get you some at guerilla-pictures.com. It reminds me how I miss those guys. Sometimes I feel very confident that some nerv-us reformation is pretty much imminent.

NOTES: This post has been "forward-dated" to stay at the top of the list of previous posts (originally posted late 10/06). I'll re-render and re-post the vids, when I can, as I get a better grip on optimizing those clips to accommodate Google Video's streaming and compression algorithms.

    dB--always thinking outta the box!
You had it right...the vids should be more fluid and less restraining. That 60's psychedelic watercolor worked at the time because it was free expression.
the concept of a live VJ who can post on the fly is pretty cool!

    I got 2 beefs, though:
I had to read everything twice. If I didn't know you or anything about live production, I would'nt have understood a word of the description due to the tragically hip nature of the banter. More concision, less bush-beating...nomsayn, dawg?
Also, I don't know if you'll get this post..."comment moderation enabled"..."no anonymous comments"...I don't wanna jump through the registration hoops here...next thing I knew it was trying to set up a blog site for me, and I already have one elsewhere, thank you.
Ohterwise, it's all good. I'll bookmark it.

  2. Sorry about the reg process, Av... Before, I began moderating the comments, the blog was prone to get bombarded with V!@gr@ spam, psychotic haters, and the like. Surely, you get that.

Let's do that Trans-Pacific collab thang we were talking about earlier. You send it; I'll sing it. Then I'll fly in to play it with you for whoever will hear it.

I'm more and more certain we're headed your way in the coming year. Maui? I can hardly wait... I have a special post in that regard in the works.

"Cohesion?" Me? I'll try, but you know that's not my strong suit.

Post a link to your thang, Bubba. I loved the "Aloha Y'all" site you sent a while back.
